Health News: Christmas can increase diabetes risk in people
Experts have warned that Christmas could have increased the risk of diabetes for millions of people. Charity diabetes UK said that eating and drinking too much over the festive period can increase the risk of developing prediabetes which is an under-diagnosed and symptom less condition that puts you up to 15 times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes.
The Charity also said that the high calorie food enjoyed by most of the people over the Christmas can rise up their weight in a short period of time. The recommended calorie intake of 2,000 a day for women and 2,500 for men can quickly exceed with mince pies containing about 200 calories each, Christmas cake with 250 calories per slice and mulled wine at 250 calories a glass. Vitamin C: Slows the rate of getting aged
Vitamin C i.e. known as a remedy for the common cold, has also shown down the ageing process. A study has shown that it facilitates output of embryonic like stem cells from the adult cells.
It has been known that adult cells can be reprogrammed into cells with characteristics similar to embryonic stem cells by turning on a select set of genes, over the past few years.

Tomato Seeds: For healthy & fit life
Want to know about the secret of a long and healthy life? A new study has suggested trying some tomato seeds for this.
Researchers in Britain have found that a natural ingredient in tomato seeds, called the ‘Fruitflow’ which was discovered by the Prof Asim Dutta Roy of the Rowett Institute who is an Indian by origin in 1999, is a key component to a long and healthy life.
“According to the researchers, the ingredient, derived from the gel around tomato seeds, prevents blood from becoming sticky and clotting”, the ‘Daily Mail’ reported.

Marigolds: A Treatment for Blindness?
It is hard to believe that marigolds can treat blindness. A British optician has claimed to have regained his sight by taking the food supplements containing the extracts from the orange flower.
73 year old Harry Marsland feared that after developing dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is a condition responsible for half of all cases of blindness in England, he would loose his sight completely.
The retired optician said that his vision in right eye had become very bad that he could not get anywhere without the help of his wife and he was even bearing in mind learning Braille when the disease affected his left eye. Read the rest of this entry »
Drink Coffee & Tea to Cut Diabetes Risk
A new study has shown that drinking more than three cups of tea, coffee (regular or decaffeinated) a day appears to lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The result is based on the investigation of previous studies reported in the December 14/28 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, JAMA.
Rachel Huxley, D.Phil, of The George Institute for International Health, University of Sydney, Australia, and colleagues identified 18 studies involving 457,922 participants and assessing the association between coffee consumption and diabetes risk published between 1966 and 2009, to reach the conclusion.
Six studies involving 225,516 individuals also included information about decaffeinated coffee, whereas seven studies with 286,701 participants reported on tea consumption. Read the rest of this entry »
Health Study: Plastic Components affects Intestine
According to a French study that has been published on Monday, a chemical Bisphenol A used in plastic container and drinks cans have been shown to affect the functioning of the intestines.
The Proceedings of the National Academy Sciences journal reported that National Institute of Agronomic Research researchers in Toulouse have found that the digestive tract of rats react negatively to even low doses of the chemical also called BPA. This research was also carried on the human intestine cells and it was found that the chemicals have lowered the permeability of the intestine and the immune system’s response to digestive inflammation.
BPA is used in the production of polycarbonated plastics and epoxy resins found in the plastic containers, baby bottles, the lining of cans used for food and beverages and in the dental sealants. Read the rest of this entry »

Health News: Hand Wash most effective way to avoid H1N1
“Washing your hands is one of the simplest and effective ways to avoid infection such as H1N1 and seasonal influenza” said Lisa Esolen, M.D., Medical Director of Infection Control, Geisinger Health System.
Lisa Esolen further added, “Because this year’s H1N1 virus has been so contagious and has rapidly spread widely, it is especially important to remember to wash your hands.”
“We don’t realize how often we touch our eyes, nose or mouth after having touched food, other people, or inanimate objects, all of which can carry germs, which can lead to illness” said Dr. Esolen. Health Tips: Mushrooms effective in Cancer
The Chinese and Japanese delicacies generally include Mushrooms which has been found to be effective in the bladder and the prostate cancer as stated in a new study. The department of Urology at the New York Medical College did a research and scientists found that the mushroom can shrink the tumours up to 75%. They also found it may also lead to new treatments.
“The breakthrough research performed on the giant edible mushroom would help in improving the life of the cancer patients”, said the Lead Researcher Dr. Sensuke Konno who is the head of the Urology department at the NYMC.
The Daily Express also quoted Dr. Konno saying that, “it is very significant because the synergy not only enhances the efficacy of the treatment but also improves the quality of the life of the patients by reducing the dose of the conventional therapies significantly”.
